FAQs

CROCHET KIT BASICS:

How do I hold the crochet hook properly?

Holding the hook correctly is essential for comfortable crocheting. Hold the hook like a pencil or knife, whichever feels more natural to you. The key is to maintain a relaxed grip, which will prevent hand fatigue as you work.

Why is my yarn fraying?

Yarn can fray if it’s being pulled too tightly. Ensure you're working at a comfortable tension to prevent fraying.

What different types of crochet stitches are there?

There are many stitches in crochet, but here are a few essential ones you'll need to crochet PUFLS mini animals:

  • MR (Magic Ring): A technique used to start crocheting in the round, creating a tight, seamless center.
  • CH (Chain Stitch): The foundational stitch used to start most crochet projects.
  • SC (Single Crochet): A basic stitch that creates a tight, dense fabric. It’s commonly used for amigurumi or smaller projects.
  • DC (Double Crochet): A taller stitch that creates a looser fabric. Great for blankets or scarves.
  • ST/SL (Slip Stitch): Used to join stitches or move across a row without adding height.
  • INC (Increase): Add 2 single crochets (sc) in the same hole to make the circle or piece wider.
  • DEC (Single Crochet Decrease): Crochet 2 single crochets together (sc 2 together) to make the piece smaller.
  • FLO (Front Loops Only): Crocheting through only the front loops of a stitch for texture and pattern.
  • BLO (Back Loops Only): Crocheting through the back loops to create a raised texture.
  • HDC (Half Double Crochet): A stitch that’s taller than single crochet but shorter than double crochet, often used for soft, slightly textured fabric.

How do I read a crochet pattern?

Crochet patterns use abbreviations for stitches and instructions. For example:

Round 1: MR, ch 1, 6 sc in the ring. (6 sc)

MR (Magic Ring): This creates a tight circle for the start of the project.

ch 1: Chain 1 to begin the row.

6 sc in the ring: Crochet 6 single crochets (sc) into the magic ring. You’ll now have 6 stitches in a small circle.

What do I do if I make a mistake while crocheting?

It’s totally normal to make mistakes! If you spot an error, just unravel the stitches (frogging) to the point where the mistake happened, and start again. Don’t worry, practice makes perfect!

Can I use the yarn from the kit for other projects?

Absolutely! The yarn in your kit can be used for any crochet project you like. It’s great for creating scarves, hats, blankets, or even home décor.

SINGLE CROCHET VS INCREASE

Single crochet (SC) is when you:

1. Insert your hook into the next stitch.
2. Yarn Over.
3. Pull the Yarn through the Stitch (you should have two loops on your hook).
4. Yarn over again and pull through both loops on the hook.

Increase (INC) is when you:

1. Do one single crochet.
2. Find the “V” of the stitch you've just made.
3. Insert your hook into the same stitch at this time (it it located under the left leg of the “V”).
4. Do the second single crochet from there.
